What Is a Prediction Market? Plain Answers, No Jargon

Answer engines, AI assistants and buyers all reward pages that define the category properly. Here is exactly what you are building, in language your investors and regulators will also understand.

Definition

Prediction Market

A prediction market is an exchange where people trade contracts whose value depends on the outcome of a future event. Prices sit between 0 and 100 (or 0 and 1) and represent the crowd's live probability estimate. If the event happens, Yes shares settle at full value and No shares at zero, and vice versa.

Definition

Event Contract

An event contract is the tradeable unit of a prediction market: a binary or multi-outcome instrument tied to one clearly worded question with a defined settlement source and expiry. Kalshi lists CFTC-regulated event contracts; Polymarket settles equivalent positions on-chain using oracle reports.

Definition

Prediction Market Platform

The full software stack behind that trading: market creation tools, a matching engine or AMM, wallets and payments, oracle-based settlement, risk and compliance controls, admin dashboards and the trader-facing web and mobile apps. That stack is what Capermint builds for you.

The Market Opportunity

Prediction Markets Just Became a Mainstream Financial Category

In little over a year, event trading went from a crypto curiosity to a multi-billion-dollar monthly market. Operators launching now are early to a category that is still compounding — and the platform you launch on decides whether you capture it.

Figures are third-party market estimates (Polymarket, Kalshi, TRM Labs, industry press, 2026) and vary by source. Shown to size the opportunity, not as guarantees.

Choose Your Model

Three Proven Prediction Market Architectures

Kalshi and Polymarket look similar on the surface but run on completely different rails. We build all three models, and we tell you honestly which one fits your licence, market and budget.

Regulated Exchange Model

The Kalshi approach: fiat in, fiat out

A centralised exchange listing event contracts under a financial licence, with a central limit order book, fiat deposits, custody and full KYC.

  • Central limit order book (CLOB) matching engine
  • Fiat payments, banking and custody integrations
  • KYC/AML, suitability and position limits built in
  • Designed for CFTC-style or local regulatory regimes
Most Requested

Decentralised Model

The Polymarket approach: on-chain settlement

Smart contract markets on chains such as Polygon or Base, with stablecoin collateral, non-custodial wallets and oracle-resolved outcomes.

  • CTF-style outcome tokens and hybrid CLOB or AMM liquidity
  • UMA or Chainlink oracle settlement flows
  • USDC collateral, gasless transactions, wallet onboarding
  • Audited Solidity contracts and subgraph indexing

Hybrid & Play-to-Predict

Free-to-play, sweepstakes or virtual currency

Prediction mechanics without real-money trading: virtual points, sweepstakes entries or engagement-led forecasting for media, brands and enterprises.

  • Virtual currency economy with rewards and leaderboards
  • Sweepstakes-compliant structures for restricted regions
  • Ideal for audience engagement, media and fan platforms
  • Upgrade path to real-money once licensed

How Prediction Markets Work

The Mechanics, Explained the Way We Build Them

Buyers who understand the machinery make better platform decisions. These four mechanisms are the heart of every serious prediction market — each one a deliberate engineering choice.

Prices Are Probabilities

Every contract trades between 0 and 100. A Yes price of 67p means the market believes there is a 67% chance the event happens. Winning shares settle at 100p, losing shares at 0p. This is why prediction markets aggregate information better than polls.

Buy 100 Yes shares at 67p for $67. If it resolves Yes, you receive $100 — a $33 profit before fees. If it resolves No, the shares expire worthless.

Order Book vs AMM Liquidity

A central limit order book (Kalshi’s model) matches real buyers and sellers with price-time priority, ideal for deep, regulated markets. An AMM (early Polymarket’s model) prices trades from a liquidity pool formula such as CPMM or LMSR, ideal for long-tail markets that need instant liquidity.

Our recommendation: hybrid designs. CLOB for headline markets, AMM seeding for new or niche markets, with market-maker incentives to tighten spreads.

Oracle-Based Settlement

Markets are only as trustworthy as their resolution. Decentralised platforms use optimistic oracles such as UMA, where a proposed outcome stands unless disputed. Centralised platforms use named settlement sources, evidence archives and human review queues with dispute windows.

What we build: dual-path resolution consoles — automated oracle feeds where possible, documented manual resolution with audit trails everywhere else.

Market Design & Question Writing

Ambiguous questions destroy platforms. Every market needs one precise question, a named settlement source, exact expiry conditions and edge-case rules written before listing. This editorial discipline is the least discussed and most important part of the category.

Included with every build: a market drafting playbook, listing templates and a review workflow so your team never lists a question that cannot be settled cleanly.

How Prediction Market Platforms Make Money

We build monetisation into the architecture, not as an afterthought. These are the revenue levers we implement and tune for operators.

Trading Fees

Maker and taker fees on matched volume, or spread-based fees on AMM trades — the core engine of Kalshi-style revenue.

Settlement & Withdrawal Fees

Small fees on winning settlements or fiat and crypto withdrawals, configurable by region and payment rail.

Liquidity & Listing Revenue

Fees for third parties to list sponsored markets, plus revenue share with professional market makers.

Premium Subscriptions

Pro tiers with advanced analytics, API access, lower fees and early market access for power traders.

B2B Data & Odds Feeds

Licensing your live probability data to media, hedge funds and research desks — an underused high-margin stream.

White-Label Sub-Licensing

Once live, license your own platform to regional partners. We architect multi-tenant support from day one if you plan this.

Sponsorship & Promotions

Brand-sponsored markets and reward pools — the primary model for free-to-play and media deployments.

Interest on Float

Where lawful, yield on custodied balances and collateral, implemented with segregation and reporting controls.

Regulation, Handled Seriously

Compliance Is a Feature, Not a Disclaimer

Prediction markets sit close to financial and gambling regulation, and the rules differ by country and by model. We are engineers, not your lawyers — but we build the controls your lawyers will ask for, and we have done it before.

Jurisdiction-aware architecture

Geofencing, region-specific market visibility, per-country payment rails and configurable restricted lists, controlled from the admin panel rather than hard-coded.

KYC/AML pipelines

Tiered verification, document and liveness checks, sanctions and PEP screening, transaction monitoring rules and SAR-ready reporting exports.

Regulated-model tooling

For exchange-style builds: position limits, market surveillance flags, member agreements, audit trails and the technical documentation packs regulators request.

Responsible-trading controls

Deposit limits, cool-off periods, self-exclusion and affordability signals — protections that increasingly decide licensing outcomes.

Sweepstakes & free-to-play structures

Where real-money trading is not available to you, we implement virtual currency and sweepstakes-compliant mechanics reviewed with your counsel.

Security by default

Independent smart-contract audits, penetration tests, SOC-style logging, encrypted PII and least-privilege admin access as standard, not add-ons.

The Details Competitors Miss

Fourteen Things Most Prediction Market Vendors Never Mention

If a proposal you are comparing does not address these, you are looking at a clone script with a sales deck. Every item below is scoped explicitly in our statements of work.

Cold-start liquidity plan

Empty order books kill launches. We deliver seeding bots, market-maker configs and incentive budgets modelled before day one.

Question-writing editorial workflow

A drafting playbook and review queue so every market has a settleable question, a named source and edge-case rules.

Dispute & mis-resolution procedure

Documented dispute windows, evidence archives, rollback procedures and user communication templates for contested outcomes.

Fee & payout maths shown pre-trade

Traders churn when payouts surprise them. Our order tickets show fees, average price and max payout before confirmation.

Latency budgets in the contract

Matching and API latency targets written into the specification and load-tested, not promised verbally.

App-store approval strategy

Apple and Google treat prediction products unevenly. We plan review categories, regional builds and web fallbacks upfront.

Gasless & walletless onboarding

For Web3 builds, account abstraction and embedded wallets so mainstream users never see a seed phrase or gas prompt.

Data exhaust as a product

Probability feeds, embeddable widgets and an odds API architected in, turning your markets into a distribution channel.

Multi-outcome & scalar markets

Beyond Yes/No: categorical markets, ranges and index-style contracts, with the settlement maths handled correctly.

Ops runbooks & training

Written runbooks for resolution days, incident response and payment failures, plus recorded admin training for your staff.

SEO & content architecture

Market pages rendered for search and answer engines, structured data and programmatic landing pages so markets acquire their own traffic.

Exit-friendly engineering

Documented code, infrastructure as code and escrow options, so you are never hostage to your vendor — including us.

Realistic legal boundaries

We say plainly what requires a licence, what does not, and where free-to-play is the honest route — before you spend.

Post-launch growth loop

Referrals, streaks, notification strategy and retention analytics designed into v1, because launch day is the start, not the finish.

An MVP with AMM liquidity typically costs $25,000 to $45,000. A white-label launch runs $25,000 to $60,000. A Polymarket-style Web3 platform with audited contracts generally costs $60,000 to $150,000, and a Kalshi-style exchange with a CLOB engine and fiat rails runs $80,000 to $250,000 or more. Engine choice, jurisdictions, audits and integrations are the main cost drivers, and we itemise all of them in a written proposal.
How long does it take to launch a prediction market platform?+
A white-label platform can go live in 4 to 8 weeks. An MVP takes 8 to 12 weeks. Web3 builds with contract audits typically take 14 to 22 weeks, and full exchange-grade builds take 16 to 30+ weeks. Timelines include design, development, testing and launch support, and are fixed in the specification you sign.
What is the difference between Kalshi and Polymarket from a technology standpoint?+
Kalshi is a centralised, CFTC-regulated exchange: fiat deposits, a central limit order book, custody and full KYC. Polymarket is decentralised: stablecoin collateral, outcome tokens on-chain, hybrid order book liquidity and oracle-based settlement through systems such as UMA. The two require different engines, payment rails and compliance postures, and we build both.
Do I need a licence to run a prediction market?+
It depends on your model and jurisdictions. Real-money event trading generally sits under financial or gambling regulation, US regulated event contracts require CFTC-designated exchange status, and many countries apply betting rules. Free-to-play and sweepstakes models can often operate without those licences. We are not a law firm, but we map the requirements with your counsel during discovery and build the controls they require.
What is a white-label prediction market platform?+
A white-label platform is a proven, production-ready prediction market product that we rebrand and configure for you: your name, design, markets, fees and payment rails on an existing tested core. It is the fastest and cheapest route to market, with the trade-off that core mechanics are shared with other licensees. Buyout and customisation options are available.
Can you build both order book and AMM based trading?+
Yes. We build central limit order book engines with price-time priority for exchange-style platforms, AMM models such as CPMM and LMSR for instant long-tail liquidity, and hybrid designs that combine both — our usual recommendation for new platforms that need headline markets to feel deep from day one.
How are markets settled and what happens in a dispute?+
Settlement uses a defined source per market: an oracle such as UMA or Chainlink, a data API, or a documented manual resolution by your operations team. Every build includes dispute windows, evidence archives, escalation procedures and audit trails, plus user communication templates, so contested outcomes are handled by process rather than panic.
Which blockchains do you support for Web3 prediction markets?+
Polygon and Base are our usual recommendations for low fees and mature tooling, and we also build on Ethereum mainnet, Arbitrum and other EVM chains. All contracts go through independent audits before mainnet, and we implement account abstraction so users can trade without gas prompts or seed phrases.
How do prediction market platforms make money?+
The main levers are trading fees on volume, settlement or withdrawal fees, premium subscriptions, sponsored and listed markets, licensing probability data to media and funds, sub-licensing your platform to partners, and sponsorship-funded rewards in free-to-play models. We implement and tune these levers as part of the build.
Will my platform handle high traffic during major events?+
Yes, if it is architected for it, which ours are. We design event-driven backends with horizontal scaling, load-test to your projected election-night or final-match peaks, set latency budgets in the specification and rehearse failover before launch. Uptime targets of 99.9% are standard in our SLAs.
Do you provide the mobile apps as well as the web platform?+
Yes. We deliver responsive web plus iOS and Android apps in Flutter or React Native, with push price alerts, biometric login and offline-safe states. We also plan the app-store approval strategy upfront, since Apple and Google review prediction products differently by region and model.
Can you add prediction markets to my existing app or website?+
Yes. We ship prediction modules, embeddable market widgets and APIs that integrate with existing products — a common route for media brands, fantasy platforms and exchanges that want event markets without rebuilding their core product.
Who owns the source code and data?+
For custom builds, you do, fully, with documentation, infrastructure as code and handover included. White-label engagements are licensed with buyout options. Either way, your user and market data is yours, and code escrow is available so you are never dependent on any vendor, including us.
What support do you provide after launch?+
Every launch includes 90 days of hypercare. After that, SLA-backed maintenance plans from $3,000 per month cover monitoring, security patching and fixes, with optional feature sprints, liquidity operations and growth optimisation. Most clients keep us on as a long-term product partner.
Glossary

Prediction Market Terms, Defined for Humans and Answer Engines

Event Contract
A tradeable instrument whose payout depends on whether a defined future event occurs, settling at full value or zero.
CLOB (Central Limit Order Book)
A matching system that pairs buy and sell orders by price and time priority, used by exchange-style platforms like Kalshi.
AMM (Automated Market Maker)
A formula-driven liquidity pool that prices trades algorithmically, giving instant liquidity without a counterparty on the other side.
CPMM / LMSR
The two most common AMM pricing formulas for prediction markets: constant-product market maker and logarithmic market scoring rule.
Oracle
A system that reports real-world outcomes to a platform or smart contract, such as UMA’s optimistic oracle or Chainlink data feeds.
Optimistic Oracle
A resolution mechanism where a proposed outcome stands unless challenged within a dispute window, escalating to token-holder voting if contested.
Outcome Token
An on-chain token representing one possible result of a market; the winning outcome’s tokens redeem for the full collateral value.
Settlement / Resolution
The process of determining a market’s final outcome from its named source and paying out winning positions.
Liquidity
How easily positions can be traded without moving the price; the defining quality difference between thriving and dead markets.
Market Maker
A participant or bot that continuously quotes both sides of a market, earning the spread while keeping books tradeable.
Geofencing
Restricting platform access or specific markets by user location to comply with regional regulation.
Turnkey Solution
A platform delivered fully operational: software, hosting, configuration, training and launch support handled by the vendor.
