Game QA and testing

Game Testing Services for Release-Ready Builds

Capermint's game testing services give studios, publishers and iGaming operators in the US, Canada and worldwide functional, compatibility, performance and compliance-readiness QA for mobile, PC, console and iGaming builds, including games other teams built. Test cycles and dedicated QA teams are quoted after scoping; in a full Capermint build, QA is included (single-game MVPs typically $10K–$40K).

Key facts

What our game testing services include

Game testing is the structured search for defects before players find them: does every feature work, does the game run on your target devices, does it hold frame rate and server load, and does the build meet the rules of the store, platform holder or regulator that must approve it? Game QA adds the process: test plans, test cases, bug reports, regression passes and a release recommendation.

We test builds at any stage, from first playable to live-service updates, whether your team, another studio or Capermint built them.

Test types

Four kinds of QA, one test plan

Most buyers looking for a game testing company need four kinds of QA: functional, compatibility, performance and compliance. We scope them together, add the specialist checks your game needs, and track every bug in one place.

Functional

Functional and regression testing

Core loop, controls, progression, economy, store and in-app purchase sandbox flows, ads, save and load, interruptions such as calls or backgrounding, and UI and localized text. Every fixed bug is retested, and each new build gets a regression pass on the areas it touched.

Compatibility

Compatibility and device testing

An agreed device matrix across OS versions, chipset tiers, screen ratios and notches, plus browsers for HTML5 games and controllers and resolutions for PC. We pick devices from your analytics or target-market data rather than a fixed list.

Performance

Performance and load testing

Frame rate, load times, memory, battery drain and heat on mobile, crash and ANR rates, and behavior on weak or dropped networks. For multiplayer and real-money games we add server load tests with simulated concurrent players, at a target you set.

Compliance

Compliance and certification readiness

Pre-submission checks against App Store, Google Play and console requirements, age-rating answers and privacy flows. For iGaming: RTP against the game math, RNG integration, wallet and responsible gaming tests before an accredited lab receives the build.

Online

Multiplayer, backend and security checks

Matchmaking, reconnects, latency, server-side outcomes, wallet and ledger reconciliation, session handling and basic client-tampering checks. Formal penetration testing goes to an independent security firm when your market or partner requires it.

We test Unity games, Unreal Engine games and HTML5 games, and our mobile game development team can take on fixes if you want one partner for testing and engineering.

Options compared

How to buy game QA: three models compared

Game QA outsourcing comes in three shapes; the right one depends on how often you ship builds and who fixes the bugs.

Cost and timeline

What game testing costs and how long it takes

We do not publish a per-hour QA rate, because cost follows scope. This is how we price each model, with the typical ranges we publish for full builds.

ScopeHow it is pricedTypical range (USD)Timing

A standalone QA quote lists the test types, device matrix, number of builds and regression passes, cycle length and price, so you can compare it line by line with other proposals.

What moves the price

  • Platforms and devices in the matrix
  • Game length and content: levels, modes, events and economies
  • Online features such as multiplayer, wallets and live events
  • Compliance scope: store, console or lab submission preparation
  • Number of builds, regression cycles and languages

Costs outside a QA quote

  • Accredited lab fees for RNG and game certification, paid by the operator or game owner
  • Any fees the platform holder charges under your developer agreement
  • Third-party penetration testing where your market or partner requires it
  • Hardware only you can supply, such as console development kits

Typical ranges. A final quote follows a scoping call.

How we work

Our game QA process, step by step

Six steps from first call to a signed-off release. With a dedicated team, steps 4 to 6 repeat for every build.

  1. Scoping and risk review

We review the build, design notes, target markets and release date, and agree which features carry the most risk.

  2. Test plan and device matrix

We write the test plan, choose devices from your audience data, define bug severity levels and agree entry and exit criteria for each cycle.

  3. Test case design

Test cases for each feature, checklists for store or platform requirements and, for iGaming, cases for RTP, wallet and responsible gaming rules.

  4. Execution cycles

A smoke test on every build, then functional, compatibility and performance passes. Each bug is logged with steps, build number, device and video or logs.

  5. Regression and compliance pass

Fixed bugs are retested, a regression pass covers changed areas, and a pre-submission check runs against the store, console or lab requirements.

  6. Release recommendation and live support

Open issues by severity with a go or no-go recommendation, then regression on patches and live updates.

Markets & compliance

Store, platform and regulator rules we test against

A build can work and still be rejected. Each app store, console maker and gaming regulator sets its own rules, and they change often. We test against the current version of each rule set and keep evidence for your submission; approval stays with the store, platform holder, lab or regulator.

App stores

Apple asks developers to test apps on-device for bugs and stability and rejects binaries that crash or show obvious technical problems (App Review Guideline 2.1(a)); since April 28, 2026, uploads must be built with Xcode 26 or later. Google Play requires new apps and updates to target Android 16 (API level 36) from August 31, 2026, with extensions available on request to November 1, 2026, and apps without an IARC content rating are removed. Play may reduce a title's visibility or show a store-listing warning when its user-perceived crash rate exceeds 1.09% or its ANR rate exceeds 0.47% over 28 days.

Consoles and children's privacy

Xbox requires titles to be fully functional and testable when they are submitted for certification (XR-003). For PlayStation and Nintendo builds, we check against the current requirement list your team or publisher holds under its developer agreement; see also our console game development services. In the US, the FTC's amended COPPA Rule took effect on June 23, 2025, with compliance required by April 22, 2026; COPPA covers online services directed to children under 13 and services that knowingly collect personal information from them. We test age screens, parental consent flows and data settings against the requirements your counsel sets.

Real-money gaming in the US and Canada

Real-money gaming is regulated jurisdiction by jurisdiction. In the US, online casino is legal in only a handful of states, for example New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island; sports betting is legal in most states under state licensing; daily fantasy sports is legal in most states with some state rules; and a growing list of states restricts sweepstakes casinos. In Ontario, games, random number generators and bet-handling system components must be approved by the AGCO Registrar or certified by an independent testing laboratory the Registrar has registered before they go live (Registrar's Standard 4.08). Alberta's regulated iGaming market launched on July 13, 2026, and other provinces offer online gambling mainly through provincial lottery and gaming corporations. Our real-money QA runs alongside our slot game development and online casino software work.

Other markets

Regulators in the UK, Malta and the rest of Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia set their own testing rules, and many labs test against standards such as GLI-19 (Interactive Gaming Systems, v3.0). In India, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games, and its Rules took effect on May 1, 2026, so for India we test free-to-play, social and e-sports formats only.

Who certifies

We are not a test lab, platform holder or regulator. We build and test RNG and game math ready for independent testing by accredited labs such as GLI, iTech Labs or BMM; certification is obtained by the operator or game owner. Operators are responsible for licensing; we build to the technical requirements of the target jurisdiction. Read what an RNG certificate is before you budget for lab testing.

FAQ

Game testing services: buyer questions

Answers to the questions studios, publishers and operators ask most before they book QA.

What are game testing services?

Game testing services are outsourced QA for video games: a team plans tests, runs them on your target devices and platforms, logs bugs with steps to reproduce and retests the fixes. Scope usually covers functional, compatibility, performance and compliance testing, bought as a fixed test cycle or as a monthly dedicated team.

What types of game testing does Capermint offer?

We run functional and regression testing, compatibility and device testing, performance and load testing, and compliance and certification-readiness testing. On request we add multiplayer and backend checks, localization checks and, for iGaming builds, RTP, RNG integration, wallet and responsible gaming tests. All test types share one plan, one bug tracker and one release recommendation.

How much does game QA testing cost?

Standalone QA is quoted after a scoping call, as a fixed price per test cycle or a monthly fee per dedicated tester. When QA is part of a full Capermint build, it sits inside our typical ranges: $10K–$40K for a single-game MVP, $40K–$120K for a mid-scope multiplayer game and $120K+ for a large custom platform. Lab and platform fees are separate.

When should game testing start?

Start functional testing as soon as the first playable build exists, and add compatibility and performance testing once core features are stable. Compliance checks belong before every store, console or lab submission. Early testing is usually cheaper, because bugs found in small builds are easier to isolate and fix than bugs found during submission or after launch.

How long does a game test cycle take?

There is no standard length: we fix each cycle's length in the test plan after scoping, based on game length, platforms, device count and test types. A smoke test on a new build is the shortest pass; a full pre-launch pass across a device matrix with compliance checks takes the longest. A dedicated team tests every build on an agreed schedule.

Should I outsource game QA or hire in-house testers?

Outsource when you need testing in bursts around milestones, wide device coverage or an outside view before a submission. Build in-house QA when you ship updates every week and want test knowledge inside the company. Many studios mix both: a small internal QA lead plus an outsourced team that scales up before launches and large updates.

Can you test a game that another studio developed?

Yes. We test builds made by your own team or by another studio. We need build or test-track access, design notes or a feature list, target devices and markets, and tracker access if you want us to work in yours. If you also want the bugs fixed, our engineers can take that on under a separate scope.

Is game testing manual or automated?

Both. Feel, visuals, difficulty and edge cases need a human player, so much of game testing is manual. We automate where it pays back: smoke tests on every build, API and server tests, load scripts and repeatable flows such as login or purchase. The test plan sets the mix, based on how often you ship builds.

Do you handle console certification?

No. Console certification is decided by the platform holder: Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo. We run pre-submission checks against the current requirements your team or publisher holds under its developer agreement, such as Xbox's rule that titles must be fully functional and testable when submitted. Console hardware testing needs development kits supplied through the licensed developer or publisher.

Can you test real-money and iGaming games for compliance?

Yes, as pre-lab readiness testing. We check RTP against the game math, RNG integration, wallet transactions and rollbacks, game history, geolocation blocking and responsible gaming tools before the build goes to an accredited lab such as GLI, iTech Labs or BMM. The operator or game owner obtains certification, and operators hold the licenses. This is general information, not legal advice.

What do I receive after a test cycle?

You receive the test plan, the device matrix, executed test cases with pass or fail results, and bug reports with steps, build number, device and video or logs. You also get a regression status for fixed bugs and a release recommendation that lists open issues by severity. Reports go into your tracker, such as Jira, or into ours.

Do you work with studios outside the US and Canada?

Yes. US and Canadian studios and operators are our priority, and we schedule calls in US and Canadian business hours, but we also test for teams in the UK and EU, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, India and APAC. For India, where online money games are prohibited, we test free-to-play, social and e-sports formats only.
